Me Before You by Heewoo Lee 44746911

A review of Me Before You

Me Before You is a British-American movie whose genre is romantic drama and is based on a novel by Jojo Moyes.
This moive is released on 16th June, 2016 in Australia.
Thea Sharrok directed the movie and a number of famous actors have taken part in the film: Sam Claflin from the Hunger Games, Emilia Clarke from Game of Thrones,  Matthew Louis from Harry Potter and Jenna Coleman from Doctor Who.

Briefly summarising, the movie deals with the story of a young promising man, Will whose body gets disabled due to a car accident. He lives mostly in a wheelchair at home, grieving his situation. But a lovely woman, Louisa who recently lost her job had a chance to work as a caregiver of Will. She has changed his life, taking him to other places and showing him how wonderful things can happen in his presence. Although they have had great time together, Will have not given up going to Switzerland for euthanasia. Lou was disappointed with his decision at first but later supported him by spending the last day with Will together.

It brought controversies over the issue of euthanasia as some positively believe that euthanasia is the right to die with dignity while others firmly opposed the practice. Personally, I enjoy the movie; I particularly like the emotional journey of which Will and Lou had before Will has euthanasia. This makes me think of how much pain and despair Will has lived with and what it is like to be Will's family and companions who have lost their loved one.

Movie Summary

Will Traynor going for work

The movie starts with a romatic scene of Will Traynor (Sam Claflin) and his girlfriend and tells a story of Will as a promising young businessman. Will enjoyed a free loving life, spending his time travelling overseas and playing a variety of sports. However, on a heavily pouring day, Will had a car accident, which made him disabled and changed his entire life; he has to rely on wheelchair and other's assistance as his body got paralysed after the motorbike hit. Having stuck at home, he stopped dating his girlfriend and started to hate his life.

Louisa Clarke taking the care-giving job for 6 months

Here comes a main female character, Louisa Clark (Emilia Clarke) who seems desperate to get a job since she becomes unemployed after being laid off at a cafe where she has worked for six years. Lou went to job centre to look for other positions as recommended by her boyfriend, Partrick (Matthew Lewis). But the job openings are what Lou normally ended up being unqualified. Despite the frequent failure, she got a chance to have an interview for the profession of care-giver. Luckly, she's hired by Will Traynor's mother, Camilla Traynor (Janet Mcteer) thanks to her cheerful personality.

Lou and Will had a first meeting and Wil does not seem nice to Lou. He thinks Lou is too chatty and her outflits are funny. He acts totally mean to Lou wheras being friendly to his nurse Nathan (Steve Peacocke)But as time passes, they get to know each other and Will finally opens his mind and gets along with Lou. It's obvious that Will recognises her sincere warm nature on a night when he was really sick due to the cold weather. On that night, Lou spent time taking care of Will and attempted to make Will happy by singing and telling her funny stories. After the night, they start going out to the garden and castle of Will's property.

One day, Will's parents and Lou accidentally know Will's plan which he decides to have euthanasia in Switzerland. Will's parents had an argument on this issue as they have conflicting view on euthanasia. Will's father, Steven Traynor (Charles Dance) understands the struggles and pain with which Will lives along while Camilla wants to stay longer with Will. Lou was also unhappy with his plan and contemplated to quit the job. She ran to her sister, Katrina Clark (Jenna Coleman) and said that she can't work there. After having a conversation with her sister, Lou came up with an idea of "bucket lists" and decided to organise a number of events which might change Will's mind, showing great things can take place in his time.

So as the first option of the planned bucket lists, Lou brought Will and Nathan to horse-racing but Will did not like much. But Lou and Will had a great day on the second event, which is the classical music concert. Since the concert, Will has a feeling towards Lou and told her that he wanted to take the moment as a man having a date with a woman dressed in a red dress. Then for the third event of the bucket lists,  Lou invited Will to her birthday dinner party where only her family and patrict would join. Will said yes and went to the birthday dinner with her favorite item "bumblebee tights" which induce Patrict's jealousy.

A lot of things happen to Will and Lou and there was the most shocking time when Will received a wedding invitation of his best friend and ex-girlfriend. In spite of sadness, he participated in the wedding with Lou and had romantic time together outside the wedding place.

Most importantly, Lou, Will and Nathan went overseas for holidays to change Will's decision and during their trip, Lou and Will discovered their feelings of love towards each other and Will gave precious experience and memory to Lou. However, Lou couldn't convince Will to live with her and she felt in despair because the trip doesn't smoothly go as her intention.

Upon the arrival to their town, Lou told Camilla that she doesn't have to pay her now and left Will. Unlike Lou's efforts, Will hasn't changed his mind and made a way to Switzerland with his parents for euthanasia.  Although Lou was not happy with Will's decision she chose to go to Switzerland to spend the last day with Will. The movie ends, showing Lou having a journey in Paris, which Will suggested in a letter.
